Challenge: Avinet came to Spider Graphics in 1997 as one of a dozen companies offering more or less the same hand-made product to scientists working mostly in the tropics. They make mist nets - nets used to trap birds for observation and banding. They needed to differentiate their company from the others, most of whom were launching websites.
Solution: Severl strategies were considered. The one chosen was two pronged. Launch a high quality, graphical ecommerce website, others were just putting out text-based catalogs with instructions for mailing in orders. The second prong was to make it multi-lingual at a time when most prople still expected the web to remain English based. Mary Beth Wright, Avinet's founder declared, "The scientists might speak English, but the orders are placed by subordinates speaking Spanish or Portuguese."
Results: Avinet is the world leader in mist net sales and many accessory items. The company has expanded and is stable in its market.
