Cornell Facilities Services
Challenge: Facilities Services (FS) at Cornell University provides a huge range of services to the university. Its 1500 employees communication everything from construction schedules to real-time building energy consumption using a dozen websites the needed major redesign and integration through a common Oracle database. 1) Achieving this integration would save thousands in website maintenance. 2) The client staff contained all the required skills, but pulling them away from primary assignments would risk achieving a less than thorough integration. 3) The project needed single-minded designers, middleware programmers, and database programmers.
Solution: Spider Graphics assigned a team reaching entirely across its staff. Two Spiders supported FSs Oracle programmers, two Spiders created thousands of lines of ColdFusion script, and two designers worked with the FS client and Cornell Office of Communication to create a new look and an interface for this major unit of the University. The Spiders 1) formed and dissolved various joint working groups, 2) met weekly to coordinate with senior staff, and 3) are continuing with still more phases of this multi-year project.
Results: The major websites have gone live right on schedule. The data integration continues as existing content is re-entered and new content is added. The look binds the FS websites together while being an exemplar for a current effort toward campus-wide graphic standards. Several leading-edge features present data in very useful ways, such as, dynamic ColdFusion-based graphics for real-time data presentation.
Please be aware that Spider ITX develops websites into which clients may place their own text. We will occasionally own a typo, but most text is placed by others.
